Amazing story by Bobby Knight related to FLEXIBILITY in Leadership while maintaining a high degree of discipline in team management. Experienced leaders are rarely "perfect." Talent on high performing teams have plenty of flaws. Coach Knight didn't concede with MJ. He didn't try to overwhelm him with dominance either. He used POSITIVE PEER PRESSURE and COMPETITIVE GREATNESS, as in, just because the competition is inferior, doesn't mean we will ever stop competing internally to be the most COMPLETE, PERSISTENT, and DISCIPLINED team on the planet!
The Daily LDP: mentorship - no cap or CAPS! mentorship is a form of servant leadership...to add AND gain perspective, only when abused does it take the shape and form of superior vs inferior views.
Here's one of my favorite mental models to use when navigating through mentorship! Fundamentals: 1. Keep mentorship structured so it's meaningful and adds value 2. Keep dialogue loose and LISTEN more than you SPEAK! 3. Use the 4 elements to prompt Q&A dialogue 4. Start with drag, then weight, then thrust, then lift - example: "what was something that has been a major drag this past week, in work or life? 5. Commit to at least 1 progressive action between "now and the next mentorship session" #alwaysgiveback #mentorship #thedailyldp #leadershipdevelopment #leansixsigma |
